Dual-SIM phones are a must-have for scores of smartphone users. They wouldn't think of buying one without it, even if its 5G capable.

Soon they can have the best of both worlds: 5G speeds and dual-SIMs thanks to MediaTek, the Taiwan, mobile semiconductor maker.

5G on dual-Sims is what consumers dream about

This week MediaTek announced Dimensity 1000, its 5G system-on-a-chip that supports 5G on not one but two SIMs. The chip also supports WiFi 6 and BlueTooth 5.1+. MediaTek claimed Dimensity has the world's fastest throughput SoC with 4.7Gbps downlink and 2.5Gbps uplink speed over sub 6GHz networks.

To make it what it calls a "performance powerhouse" MediaTek paired four Arm Cortext-A77 cores operating up to 2.6GHz with four power-efficient Arm Cortex-A55 cores operating at up to 2.0GHz. MediaTek said in a press release announcing Dimensity 1000 the SoC is also the world's first to enable seamless streaming and gaming at 5G speeds.

“Dimensity 1000 brings the latest connectivity, multimedia, AI, imaging and gaming innovations, all tuned for 5G performance to consumers so they can expect incredible experiences with Dimensity powered 5G devices,” said MediaTek President John Chen in the press release. “Our first announced chip, MediaTek Dimensity 1000, gives consumers a significantly faster, more intelligent and all-around incredible mobile experience.”

MediaTek smartphones coming in early 2020

Dual-SIMs is a big deal for a segment of the smartphone market. Some like it to separate their work and personal life on one phone, while others like the ability to jump to the lowest-cost plan. All of that is achievable with phones that support dual-SIMs. Adding 5G to the mix and MediaTex could have a hit on its hands.

According to Engadget, the first 5G smartphones using MediaTek's SoC should begin appearing in the first quarter of next year although it's not clear if it will include dual-SIM 5G phones. MediaTek may try to move quickly to capitalize on first player advantage before others jump into the market.
